About the IM5
The IM5 is a long, low electric saloon from SAIC's upmarket IM brand, sold and serviced in the UK through MG dealers. It has a fastback shape with a hatchback tailgate, and three versions: Standard Range from £39,950, Long Range and the 751 hp Performance.
## Battery, range and charging
The Standard Range uses a 75 kWh battery for about 304 miles, while the Long Range and Performance get a 100 kWh pack. The Long Range is the efficiency champion at up to 441 miles on the WLTP cycle, one of the longest ranges of any car at this price; the Performance manages around 357 miles. The 800-volt platform allows a 10–80% charge in about 17 minutes on a 350 kW charger, with the smaller battery taking around 26 minutes. A drag coefficient of just 0.226 helps.
## Performance and driving
The Long Range has a single 300 kW motor, while the Performance adds a second for all-wheel drive, 553 kW (751 hp) and 802 Nm – enough for 0–62 mph in 3.2 seconds. Four-wheel steering gives a turning circle under 10 metres. Testers praise the quiet motorway manners, but the ride can feel firm and the steering offers little feedback.
## Interior and space
The cabin is dominated by a 26.3-inch ultra-wide touchscreen and a 10.5-inch central display, with heated and ventilated leather-style seats, a panoramic glass roof and a 20-speaker sound system. Rear legroom is generous and the backrests adjust. The 457-litre boot is reached through a hatch, so it is easier to load than a conventional saloon's.
## Technology and safety
One-Touch iAD can park the car, pull it out of a space or reverse it at the press of a button. Rainy Night Mode uses radar and cameras to show pedestrians and vehicles on screen in poor visibility, and hydroplaning stability control is included. Most controls go through the screens, which some reviewers find fiddly. The car carries a seven-year/80,000-mile warranty, with eight years or 100,000 miles on the battery.
## Who is it for?
Drivers who want huge range or supercar-like acceleration in a practical executive car for Tesla money. It takes on the Tesla Model 3, BYD Seal and Hyundai Ioniq 6.
