About the MGS5

The MGS5 EV is MG's compact electric SUV, built on the same Modular Scalable Platform as the MG4 EV and replacing the old ZS EV in spirit. Prices start at £28,995, and the range runs SE, SE Long Range and Trophy Long Range, all with rear-wheel drive.

## Battery, range and charging

The SE has a 49 kWh battery, while Long Range models use a 64 kWh pack rated at up to 298 miles on the WLTP cycle. The 400-volt system accepts up to 139 kW, so a 10–80% top-up takes 28 minutes or less. Energy recovery has four levels plus an adaptive setting and a one-pedal mode.

## Performance and driving

There are two motor outputs: 125 kW for the SE and 170 kW for the Long Range versions, which reach 62 mph in 6.3 seconds. A lightweight chassis, five-link rear suspension and well-judged weight distribution keep body roll in check. MG says the Continental-developed brakes stop the car from 62 mph in 35.5 metres.

## Interior and space

Cabin space is generous for the class, with good leg- and headroom in the back. The boot has an adjustable floor and up to 1,441 litres with the rear seats folded, and the Trophy adds a powered tailgate. The dashboard uses a 12.8-inch touchscreen and a configurable 10.25-inch driver display.

## Technology and safety

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the MG iSMART app can locate the car or pre-heat the cabin. The Trophy adds built-in apps, a wireless charging pad and a 360-degree camera. Every version has seven airbags, including a centre airbag, plus MG Pilot aids such as blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert.

## Who is it for?

Families who want an affordable electric SUV with a decent range and quick charging. It goes up against the Kia EV3, Skoda Elroq and BYD Atto 3, and undercuts most of them on price.
