The MGS9 Plug-in Hybrid is MG's largest car in the UK: a full seven-seat SUV with three proper rows. It starts at £34,210, which makes it one of the most affordable seven-seat plug-in hybrids on sale, and comes in Comfort and Premium trims.

## Engine, economy and charging

A 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine works with a 24.7 kWh battery, a big pack for a plug-in hybrid. That gives an official electric-only range of 62 miles, enough for most commutes and school runs without using petrol. On longer trips the engine takes over, so there is no need to plan around public chargers.

## Performance and driving

Combined output is 299 PS, and the MGS9 gets from 0 to 62 mph in 9.6 seconds. Power goes through a single-speed automatic gearbox, and the car is set up for smoothness and quiet rather than sporty handling – it is at its best on electric power in town.

## Interior and space

All three rows are designed to take adults, and the sliding second row lets you share legroom between the middle and back seats. Fold both rear rows and there is up to 2,093 litres of load space. Comfort trim already has a panoramic roof, tri-zone climate control, a power tailgate, an eight-way electric driver's seat with memory and five USB ports spread across the rows.

## Technology and safety

Twin 12.3-inch screens handle instruments and infotainment, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium adds a 12-speaker Bose audio system and a hands-free tailgate. The MGS9 has a five-star Euro NCAP rating, seven airbags including a centre airbag, and the full MG Pilot suite, all covered by MG's seven-year, 80,000-mile warranty.

## Who is it for?

Larger families who want seven usable seats and cheap electric commuting without going fully electric. Rivals include the Kia Sorento PHEV, Skoda Kodiaq iV and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, most of which cost considerably more.
