About the Atto 2
The Atto 2 DM-i is the plug-in hybrid version of BYD’s compact SUV, launched in the UK in June 2026 and now the cheapest way into an Atto 2 at £26,995. It uses BYD’s Super DM system, in which the electric motor does most of the driving and a 1.5-litre petrol engine mainly acts as a generator. Two trims are offered: Active and Boost.
## Engine, economy and charging
Active has a 7.8 kWh Blade battery for 24 miles of electric range; Boost doubles up to 18 kWh for 55 miles. With a full tank the total range is 577 and 621 miles. Weighted WLTP economy is 201.8 mpg for Active and 470.8 mpg for Boost, while running on petrol alone both return around 55 mpg. Charging is AC only: 3.3 kW on Active and 6.6 kW on Boost, which fills from 15% to 100% in about three hours.
## Performance and driving
The petrol engine produces 72 kW (97 PS), and the 145 kW electric motor delivers 300 Nm. Combined output is 165 PS for Active and 212 PS for Boost, giving 0–62 mph in 9.1 and 7.5 seconds respectively and a 111 mph top speed. Around town it feels much like an EV, with the engine cutting in quietly when needed.
## Interior and space
At 4,330 mm long it is fractionally longer than the electric Atto 2, and the boot is 425 litres, expanding to 1,335 litres with the rear seats folded. ISOFIX points are fitted to the front passenger seat and outer rear seats. Boost adds vegan leather, a panoramic roof, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.
## Technology and safety
All versions have a 12.8-inch touchscreen, an 8.8-inch driver display, Google built-in, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, NFC keyless entry and a full driver-assistance suite. Boost adds a 360-degree camera, wireless charging and Vehicle-to-Load. Braked and unbraked towing limits are both 750 kg.
## Who is it for?
Drivers who want low running costs but can’t yet commit to a pure EV, or who regularly cover long distances. Rivals include the MG ZS Hybrid+, Jaecoo 5 and Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid; the Boost is the version to get if you can charge at home.
