Overview

The MG HS (from £27,495) is the entry-level version of the MG HS, a petrol SUV. It offers 169 hp and 0–62 mph in 9.4 s.

The HS petrol is the entry model of MG's second-generation family SUV, priced from £27,495 in SE trim with a plusher Trophy above it. It offers a large, well-equipped cabin and a five-star Euro NCAP rating for the money that rivals charge for much smaller cars.

Engine and economy

A 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine produces 169 PS and 275 Nm, driving the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. Official economy is up to 38.1 mpg combined. It is the simplest HS – no battery to charge – but also the thirstiest, so high-mileage drivers should look at the Hybrid+ or Plug-in Hybrid.

Performance and driving

0–62 mph takes 9.4 seconds and top speed is 118 mph, which is respectable for a car this size. The turbo engine has plenty of mid-range pull, the ride is comfortable and the steering light. It's tuned for comfort rather than sporty driving, and the manual gearbox gives the driver more control than the automatics in other versions.

Interior and space

The HS has one of the biggest boots in its class: 507 litres, rising to 1,484 litres with the rear seats folded. Rear passengers get generous legroom. SE trim now has heated front seats and a heated steering wheel; Trophy adds leather-style and suede-style upholstery (black or red), ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate and a memory driver's seat. It can tow up to 1,500 kg.

Technology and safety

Twin 12.3-inch screens handle infotainment and instruments, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, live sat nav, a Bluetooth phone key and wireless charging on every model. A 360-degree camera is standard. MG Pilot includes autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot detection with lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert and door open warning.

Who is it for?

Families who want maximum space and equipment for the money and don't mind a manual gearbox. It undercuts the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage and Skoda Karoq while offering a larger boot and a seven-year warranty.
