Overview
The MG HS Plug-in Hybrid (from £33,495) is the top version of the MG HS, a plug-in hybrid SUV. It offers a claimed range of 75 mi electric and 0–62 mph in 6.8 s.
The HS Plug-in Hybrid is the most powerful and best-equipped version of MG's family SUV, and What Car? named it Best Plug-in Hybrid for both 2025 and 2026. It costs £33,495 in SE trim, with a Trophy above, which makes it one of the cheapest PHEV family SUVs on sale.
Battery, range and charging
A 24.7 kWh battery (23.2 kWh usable) gives up to 75 miles of electric driving on the WLTP cycle – enough for most commutes – and Auto Express managed 68 miles in its test. There's no DC rapid charging; a 7 kW wallbox fills it in about four hours, a three-pin plug in about seven and a half. Official CO2 is just 12 g/km, which keeps company-car tax low. With a flat battery, expect high-30s to mid-40s mpg.
Performance and driving
A 1.5-litre turbo petrol and an electric motor combine for about 300 bhp, sending power through a two-speed automatic. 0–62 mph takes 6.8 seconds and top speed is 105 mph. Electrifying.com praised the ride and refinement and said the switch between electric and petrol power is almost unnoticeable, though the steering lacks feel.
Interior and space
The battery doesn't eat into luggage space: the boot holds 507 litres, or 1,484 litres with the rear seats down. Trophy adds a panoramic opening sunroof, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate, a power tailgate and heated leather-style and suede-style seats with memory, available in black or red. Braked towing capacity is 1,500 kg.
Technology and safety
You get a 12.3-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instruments, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat nav, wireless charging, keyless entry and a 360-degree camera. MG Pilot adds adaptive cruise with intelligent speed limit assist, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot detection and active rear cross-traffic alert. Some reviewers find the touchscreen climate controls fiddly.
Who is it for?
Families and company-car drivers who can charge at home and want to do most journeys on electricity without range anxiety. Key rivals are the BYD Seal U DM-i, Jaecoo 7 SHS-P and Kia Sportage PHEV.
