Overview
The BYD Seal 6 DM-i Touring (from £35,020) is the top version of the BYD Seal 6, a plug-in hybrid estate. It offers a claimed range of 62 mi electric, 212 hp and 0–62 mph in 8.5 s.
The Seal 6 DM-i Touring is the estate version of BYD’s plug-in hybrid Seal 6, and its big selling point is load space. It costs £1,000 more than the saloon, starting at £35,020 for Boost and £38,020 for Comfort, and is one of the cheapest plug-in hybrid estates on sale in the UK.
Battery, range and charging
The battery choices mirror the saloon’s: a 10 kWh pack in Boost gives about 31 miles of electric range, and Comfort’s 19 kWh pack about 62 miles – slightly less than the saloon because of the estate’s extra weight and taller roofline. BYD quotes combined range of up to 839 miles and economy of 58.9 mpg. Comfort can charge on DC at up to 26 kW; Boost is AC only.
Performance and driving
Power comes from the same 1.5-litre petrol engine and front electric motor, giving 0–62 mph in 8.5 seconds in the 212 hp Comfort. Most short trips are completed on electric power, and the engine cuts in smoothly to act chiefly as a generator. As with the saloon, the softly set-up chassis prioritises comfort, but body control on rough roads is not a strength.
Interior and space
The boot is the headline: up to 675 litres with the seats up and almost 1,535 litres with them folded. The load area has a 12V socket, bag hooks, lighting and quick-release levers to drop the rear seats. Rear passengers get plenty of legroom, and Comfort adds heated and ventilated front seats with memory and a panoramic glass roof.
Technology and safety
Boost has a 12.8-inch touchscreen and 17-inch wheels; Comfort gets the 15.6-inch rotating screen, a 360° camera and larger wheels. Smartphone mirroring, adaptive cruise control and a suite of driver-assistance systems are standard across the range.
Who is it for?
Families, dog owners and business users who need a big boot but want to run mostly on electricity. It undercuts the Skoda Superb Estate iV, Volkswagen Passat eHybrid and Peugeot 508 SW Hybrid by a wide margin.
